Reels vs TikTok vs YouTube Shorts: What to Edit Differently in 2026

✍️ Shankar, Creative Director📅 4 September 2026⏱ 6 min read

Reels, TikTok and Shorts all use the same 1080×1920 (9:16) canvas, so one master edit works across all three — but each platform overlays its interface in different places. Keep critical elements inside a 900×1400 pixel centred box and adjust captions per platform, and you're safe everywhere.

Most creators learn this the hard way: a Reel that looked perfect in the editor posts to TikTok with the hook text hidden behind the like button. The fix isn't three separate edits. It's one edit built around the overlap of all three safe zones, with two small per-platform tweaks.

Safe zones: where each platform hides your content

PlatformBlocked areaWhy

Instagram ReelsBottom 310px, top 210pxCaption, audio track and buttons at bottom; status bar at top
YouTube ShortsBottom 300px, top 120pxTitle and subscribe button overlay bottom-left

The universal box is the rule we use for every client. Text, logos, lower thirds and the subject's face stay inside it. Everything outside is decorative.

Length: the numbers that actually matter

This is why we count one video as 60 seconds. Anything longer is a different format with different retention curves — and usually a different edit.

What to change per platform

Captions

TikTok viewers expect large, word-by-word highlighted captions in the centre. Reels viewers tolerate smaller captions but they must sit above the bottom 310px. Shorts viewers are often on desktop, where captions can be slightly smaller. We export one master with centre captions, then nudge them 40px up for Reels.

Hook placement

On TikTok, the first frame text should sit in the upper-middle — the caption block expands from the bottom and can cover a low-placed hook. On Reels and Shorts, upper-middle also works, so this is one rule for all three.

Audio

TikTok's trending sounds don't transfer — a sound that's viral on TikTok is just background music on Reels. We edit to the beat of the sound on TikTok, then swap to a licensed track for Reels and Shorts to avoid copyright claims.

End screen

Shorts support a subscribe overlay in the last 3 seconds. Reels and TikTok don't, so we add a text CTA inside the safe zone instead.

Shoot in 4K

If you film horizontal 1920×1080 and crop vertical, you only get a 608×1080 slice — visibly soft on a phone. Shoot 4K (3840×2160) and the vertical crop lands at a full 1080×1920. Or just shoot vertical in the first place.

Safe zones tell you where to put things. For what goes in the first 3 seconds, read The Anatomy of a 60-Second Video.

The workflow we use

  1. Edit one vertical master with all elements inside the 900×1400 safe box
  2. Export at 1080×1920, 30fps, 12–15 Mbps bitrate (platforms recompress, so start high)
  3. Duplicate for Reels: nudge captions up 40px, swap to licensed audio
  4. Duplicate for Shorts: add subscribe CTA in final 3 seconds
  5. Preview on a real phone before publishing — every editing app has a "show safe zones" toggle; turn it on and leave it on

Three exports, one edit, about 10 minutes of extra work. That's what "platform-optimised" should mean — not three separate invoices.

Frequently asked questions

Can I post the same edit to Reels, TikTok and Shorts?

Yes, if you keep all text, faces and logos inside a 900×1400 pixel box centred in the 1080×1920 frame. That universal safe zone clears the interface overlays on all three platforms.

What is the TikTok safe zone in 2026?

TikTok's safe zone is 900×1492 pixels centred in a 1080×1920 canvas. Keep text away from the top 108px, the bottom 320px, the left 60px and the right 120px where the action buttons sit.

How long can a YouTube Short be?

YouTube Shorts can run up to 3 minutes as of 2026, though most performing Shorts are under 60 seconds. Reels and TikToks perform best between 15 and 45 seconds.

Should I shoot in 4K for vertical video?

Yes. Cropping a vertical 1080×1920 frame from 1920×1080 footage leaves only a 608×1080 slice. Shooting in 4K (3840×2160) gives enough resolution to crop a clean vertical frame.
